KENORA, Ont. – An investigation has been launched after a youth in Kenora was struck by plastic projectiles following an interaction with police.
According to a media release from the Special Investigations Unit, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police in Kenora received reports of a robbery at a downtown restaurant on April 19, 2021 at approximately 7:15 p.m.
Officers responded to the scene and a short time later a 15-year-old person of interest was found behind a home in an alleyway between 5th Avenue South and 6th Avenue South.
Following an interaction between police and the youth, an officer discharged an Anti Riot Weapon ENfield, also known as an ARWEN, which discharges plastic projectiles.
The youth was hit by the projectiles and transported to hospital for assessment. According to the SIU, the youth did not sustain any serious injuries.
The SIU invokes its mandate anytime a firearm is discharged and the ARWEN is classified as a firearm.
Three investigators have been assigned to the case and one subject officer and two witness officials have been designated.
